Hope deferred makes the heart sick

Proverbs 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

This past year hope has continually been given, and then taken away from people – and that makes people’s hearts sick.

“Flatten the curve, then we can go back to normal” was followed by “a few more weeks, and when it’s summer then…” and then by “okay, when we start wearing masks, it could disappear in six weeks” which was followed by “it’s winter, so only a few more months” and then by “ouch, there is a British mutation, so it will take a while now, but then…”

When hope is continually given and then taken away it makes the hearts of many people literally sick. Corona measures are there to protect and increase the health of people. This is good. However, health is broader than just physical health, as the Bible shows. When people’s hearts are sick – that is also a health issue.

How to deal with this? First, instead of putting our hope in people or in earthly governments – we need to put our hope in Jesus. He will fulfil our longings. Second, let’s pray for more people in government who see that health is a broader issue than just physical health.

Our hope remains in Jesus.
