I’ll become even more undignified than this

And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart. But David said: I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes.  (2 Samuel 6: 16, 22)

Maybe you know Matt Redman’s song “Undignified”?

I will dance
I will sing
To be mad for my King
And I’ll become even more undignified than this

It is based on this story in the Bible, of David dancing half-naked in front of the ark. When you look at this story through a ‘religious’ lens it doesn’t make sense at first. Uzzah who wants to keep the ark from falling, is struck down dead. Meanwhile David is dancing half naked in front of it.

This shows that God does not look at the outward behaviour but He only looks at the heart. Uzzah’s outward behaviour seemed dignified, however in his heart he had no respect for God. David’s outward behaviour seemed undignified, but in his heart he was madly in love with his God.

Do not ever let other people judge your ‘undignified’ behaviour. Stay as a child in His presence!
